Goal Setting...Start Now!
Hello and thank you for coming to this page.

You may have thought about setting goals or you may even have started only for it to fall through. The purpose of this page is to take you through the stages of successful goal setting.

Goal Setting

Stage 1 - What is the goal that you want to achieve?
The reason that we don't achieve our goals is that they require action and then a commitment to see them through. Most people can think of what they want, but have difficulty taking it to the next stage and committing it to paper.

However, the good news is that once you have started, there are steps that you can take to get you to your goal.

Make sure that your aim is to achieve something that is exciting and motivates you.

It is important that your goal is not just to move away from something negative. An example of this is with smokers; cigarette packets contain dire warnings of the damage that smoking has to health. People who smoke are well aware that it is not good for them, but threating them with negative messages does not motivate them to change. The way to help them is to emphasise the improvements to their lives when they stop, like feeling healthier and fitter so they are able to enjoy time with their children, or perhaps the benefit of having money for a holiday, or that new car they always wanted.

The natural reaction for anyone is to keep everything the same, no matter how bad that may be, we cling onto what is familiar. So although you may feel that you want to resist it, complete stage 1.

Stage 1: Call To Action
, spend a bit of time and think about what you want, use your imagination, what excites and motivates you? Write it down, go on do it now.

Goal Setting

Stage 2 - Creating a plan
To obtain your goal you will need to break it down into a plan of action. Think about a maximum of five smaller steps that will help you to achieve your aim.

Visualising your end goal is good, but unless you take action to make it happen, it will only ever remain a dream and you don't want that, do you?

To help you stay motivated it is important that you reward yourself every time that you achieve a step towards your goal. This can be anything that you want for example; going to the cinema, buying a book or some item of clothing, whatever you want as long as it does not detract from your main goal.

There is one important thing to be aware of when you start on your journey, there may be set backs on the way. This isn't a problem, as long as you alter your course and remain focused on where you want to be. People who succeed have experienced more set backs than anyone else, but the difference is that they keep going.

Stage 2: Call to action
First of all set a date to achieve your main goal:  then for each of the steps write down the following action plan:

I your name will achieve................................ by..........................

Then, for each of the steps write down the following:

My first step to achieve my goal is........................
The action required by me, to achieve this is..................

The date I will achieve this by is..........................
When I achieve this stage, I will reward myself with................

Now repeat this up to a maximum of five times, taking you up to when you want to achieve your main goal.

Goal Setting

Stage 3 - Motivation
Nature provides some wonderful sights and experiences, which we can all sometimes take for granted. But it is equally important to appreciate the wonderful architecture, inventions and discoveries that the human world has also achieved. Every building, invention and discovery all started as a thought in the mind of someone, who then took the next step and put it into action.

For you to want to do something there has to be a benefit to what you are doing and you must feel passionately about it. So I would like you to focus on how good life will be when you achieve your goal. Do not concentrate on escaping from negative things, but look towards the good positive benefits that you will gain from achieving your goal.

So list at least three benefits and make them as exciting as possible, the more you can see, feel and sense this, the better, really use your imagination.

Is there a visual representation of your main goal, perhaps a picture in a magazine or from the internet, which you can download? If so start to search for appropriate images that you can look at to keep you motivated.

Stage 3: Call to action
Write down three benefits that you will experience when you reach your goal.

Benefit 1.........................................

Benefit 2.........................................

Benefit 3.........................................

Look out for images that represent your goal and pick one that really inspires you.

Goal Setting

Stage 4 - Stopping procrastination and overcoming obstacles
Do you find that you like the idea of something but never get around to starting it? Or think that it will never work? As mentioned in stage one it is quite natural to resist change, even if it is something that you really want.

However, once you physically write down what you want and make a start, unconsciously you have then planted the seed to complete your goal. The important thing is that you start!

It is also easy to think of problems that will stop you from being successful. The interesting thing is that being aware of problems, can actually be used to help you get the thing that you want. So be optimistic about your overall goal, but also realistic about the obstacles that you may encounter on the way. It is quite common for people to give up when things may go wrong, instead of accepting that these things do happen.

If you have already accepted some areas that may cause a problem and started to look for solutions, it is then something that you are prepared for. Change your thinking so that you look at a problem as a challenge to be overcome, instead of as a defeat stopping you pursuing your dream.

Stage 4: Call to action
Go through the following exercise for benefits and setbacks:

What is your goal?________________

Potential Benefits
In one word write down an important way in which your life will be improved __________
Now expand on all the benefits you will have from achieving this.

Potential Setback
Write down one word that represents a challenge, or barrier to you achieving your aim __________
Now expand on how it would cause problem for you achieving your goal and the options that you have to get around it.

Now repeat the above stages once more.

Stage 5 - Assess how you feel
The following exercise is useful in helping you find areas that you might want to improve and also allowing you to measure the progress that you are making.

Download the Life Circle PDF document on this page and then mark yourself out of 10. The score of 10 means that this area is perfect and 1 means that a major improvement is required. Then date the Life Circle and write the score in each section.

There are eight sections; Health, Family, Career, Social, Self-improvement, Wellbeing, Finances & Attitude.

Stage 5: Call to action
Download the Life Circle PDF and then score yourself from 1 to 10 in each of the sections:

Health: How is your health? how do you feel? are there things that you can do to be fitter? e.g. stopping smoking, healthier diet, more exercise.

Family: What does family life mean to you? Family can be a great comfort, but can also cause stress.

Career: Does this give you a feeling of achievement or do you feel frustrated? Or perhaps you are looking to get back into employment.

Social: This section does not refer to going to parties etc, but on how you feel that you relate to other people in different everyday situations.

Self-improvement: Is there anything that you would like to do to improve yourself, eg: learning a language or a craft. It is important to stretch and develop your skills, how do you think you are doing?

Wellbeing: How is your overall feeling of emotional health, do you feel stressed or do you feel calm and relaxed?

Finances: This isn't about how much money you have, but how do you relate to money. Are you at ease with money or does it cause you stress?

Attitude: Do you have a positive or negative attitude? Do you look for solutions or problems?

Print off the above files and work through them using the five stages on this page. Once you have completed them, put them in either an A4 presentation folder or ring binder.

Next is the most important part, keep the folder beside your bed and every night and every morning look at your folder so that you are constantly reminded of your goal.

With the Life Circle, carry out a review every three months, to check how you are progressing in all areas of your life.

Be aware that your plan of how you get to your goal may have to be changed as you proceed, so don't be afraid to update and make changes on the way.

Thoughts have no value without action, start today!
